Jock o' Braidiesley

Johnny raise up on a May mornin'
Ca’d for water to wash his hands
Says "Gie louse tae me ma twa grey dugs
That lie bound in iron bands - bands
That lie bound in iron bands"

When Johnny's mither, she heard o' this
Her hands for dule she wrang
Sayin' "Johnny for my benison
Tae the greenwood dinna gyang - gyang
Tae the greenwood dinna gyang"

But Johnny has ta'en his guid bent bow
And his arrows ane by ane
And he's awa' tae the greenwood gane
Tae ding the dun deer doon - doon
Tae ding the dun deer doon

Well Johnny has shot, the dun deer's lapt
[deleted And]He's wounded her in the side
And twixt the waters and the woods
His grey dugs laid her pride - pride
His grey dugs laid her pride

They ate sae much o' the venison
And they drank sae much o' the bleed
That Johnny and his twa grey dugs
Fell asleep gin they were deid - deid
Fell asleep gin they were deid

Noo by there cam' a silly auld man
And an ill death may he dee
And he's awa' tae Esslemont
The king's seiven foresters tae see - see
The king's seiven foresters tae see

As I cam' in by Monymusk
And doon amongst yon scroggs
It was there I spied the bonniest youth
Lyin' sleepin' atween twa dugs - dugs
Lyin' sleepin' atween twa dugs

And the buttons that were on his coat
Were o' the gowd sae guid
And the twa dugs that laid by his side
Their mou's were caked wi' bleed - bleed
Their mou's were caked wi' bleed

Then up and spak the first forester
He was heid man ower them a'
Says "If this be Jock o' Braidiesley
Untae him we maun draw - draw
Untae him we maun draw"

Well the first shot that the foresters fired
It wounded him in the knee
And the next shot that the foresters fired
His hert's bleed blint his e'e - e'e
His hert's bleed blint his e'e

Noo this waukened Johnny oot o' his sleep
And an angry man was he
Says "Ye micht hae waukened me frae my sleep
Ere my hert's bleed blint my e'e - e'e
Ere my hert's bleed blint my e'e"

And he's set his back against an aik
And his fit against a stane
And he's fired upon the seiven foresters
And he's killed them all but ane - ane
He's killed them all but ane

And he's broken fower o' this man's ribs
His airm and his collar bane
Then he set him back upon his horse
Tae cairry the tidins hame - hame
Tae cairry the tidins hame

Noo Johnny's guid bent bow lies brak
And his twa grey dugs are slain
And his body lies in Monymusk
And his huntin' days are dane - dane
His huntin' days are dane
